The 30-minute helicopter tour in Dubai: the only one that reaches the old city

Every other flight here turns back along the new coastline. Half an hour carries on past Sheikh Zayed Road to Dubai Creek, the wind towers and the souks — the half of this city that is genuinely a hundred years old, and the half that almost nobody photographs from the air.

What the last ten minutes buy

A completely different city, and the one most visitors never see

Sheikh Zayed Road, Burj Khalifa, and then the Creek — which is where Dubai actually started.

Up to about twenty minutes, every flight here is showing you the same Dubai: built out into the sea, finished in the last twenty-five years, and designed to be looked at.

The thirty-minute flight keeps going inland. Past Sheikh Zayed Road, which from above is a canyon of towers with twelve lanes at the bottom of it, and past Burj Khalifa, which is the only structure in this city that is genuinely hard to fit in a window.

And then Dubai Creek, which is where the city actually started. A natural inlet with the old souks on both banks, wind towers on the Bastakiya houses, abras crossing back and forth all day, and dhows tied up along the wharfage with cargo stacked on the quay.

From the air the contrast is the point: on one side of the frame a skyline built in a generation, on the other a working port that has been doing the same job since before the oil. Nothing else on this page shows you both.

How long to fly

What is on the last third of the route

Six things the short flights miss

In the order the thirty-minute flight reaches them.

  • Dubai Marina and JBR

The densest cluster of towers anywhere on the route, with the marina cutting through the middle of it and the beach strip along the front.

  • Sheikh Zayed Road

Twelve lanes with towers on both sides for kilometres. From the air it reads as a canyon, which is not how it feels from a taxi.

  • Burj Khalifa

Over eight hundred metres, and the only building in Dubai that is difficult to fit in a helicopter window. The scale finally makes sense when you have towers beside it for comparison.

  • Dubai Creek

The natural inlet the city grew around, with abras crossing constantly and dhows tied up along the wharfage.

  • The old quarter

Wind towers on the Bastakiya houses, the gold and spice souks, and low buildings packed tight in a way nothing else in modern Dubai is.

  • The working port side

Cargo on the quay, dhows loading for Iran and East Africa, and a trading operation that has been running since long before any of the towers existed.

If the Palm is the whole reason you are flying, the short flight covers it completely and costs less than half as much.

The short flight

Common questions

The thirty-minute flight, answered

How much is a 30-minute helicopter tour in Dubai?

$454 per person. It is the longest flight bookable on this page and the only one that reaches Dubai Creek and the historic quarter.

What does the 30-minute flight cover?

Palm Jumeirah and Atlantis, the Jumeirah coast and Burj Al Arab, Dubai Marina and JBR, Sheikh Zayed Road and Burj Khalifa, and then the Creek and the old city.

Is it worth the extra over a shorter flight?

If you want the old half of Dubai, yes — nothing else here reaches it. If the Palm is the reason you are going up, the short flight covers that completely for less than half the price.

Do you fly over Burj Khalifa?

The route covers Sheikh Zayed Road with Burj Khalifa at the end of it. Exact separation from any structure is a matter for the operator and air traffic control on the day.

Is it accessible?

Step-free access is listed on this flight, which is one of two on this page. Confirm the specifics with the operator through the listing.

How many reviews does it have?

67 at 4.5. That is a solid score on a much smaller sample than the short flight or the Palm flight, so you are leaning more on the route than on the crowd.
