Dubai helicopter tour photos: shooting through the glass
You have twelve to thirty minutes, one window, and no second pass. Almost everything that goes wrong with helicopter photographs goes wrong before you take a single frame, and the fixes are free.

The four rules
In order of how much difference they make
Dark clothes, no flash, a centimetre off the glass, wide frame. In that order of importance.
1. Wear something dark. This is the biggest one and almost nobody knows it. A light shirt reflects in the window and sits over the top of your photograph like a ghost. Black or navy removes most of it. If you are travelling with somebody, it helps if they are dark too — they are in the reflection as well.
2. Switch the flash off before you board. Not when you notice it firing. On a phone in auto mode it will fire at a dark window and come back as a white disc in the middle of the frame. Set it to off and leave it off.
3. Hold the lens about a centimetre off the glass. Touching the window transmits engine vibration straight into the lens and softens everything. Holding it back picks up reflections from the cabin. A centimetre is close enough to cut the reflection and far enough to isolate the vibration.
4. Shoot wide. The Palm is a shape and the shape is the point. A long lens gives you a street of villas, which you could have photographed from a taxi. Wide also hides camera shake, which at helicopter speed you have plenty of.

None of these needs different equipment.
- Decide your shot before you lift off
You have twelve to thirty minutes. Working out what you want in the air costs you a third of it. The Palm is in the first three minutes on every flight here.
- Burst rather than single frames
The aircraft is moving and vibrating. Three frames give you one sharp one; a single frame gives you a coin toss.
- Video is more forgiving than stills
Stabilisation on a modern phone handles helicopter vibration better than a still shutter does. If in doubt, film and take stills off the footage afterwards.
- Fly early if it is summer
Haze builds as the ground heats, so the first slot of the morning is visibly sharper than midday between May and September.
- Include the rotor or the window edge sometimes
It looks like a mistake and it is not. A frame with the aircraft in it says helicopter, which is half the story.
- Put the camera down for the last minute
On a twelve-minute flight that is eight per cent of it, and it is the part you will actually remember. The photographs will be waiting when you land.
