Why they ask for your weight
It is arithmetic, and nobody is judging anybody
The centre of gravity has to sit inside an envelope. That is the whole reason for the question.
A light helicopter carries four to six passengers and is sensitive to how their weight is distributed. The centre of gravity has to sit inside a defined envelope before the rotor turns, and the pilot works that out from the numbers you gave.
So the operator asks, and then assigns seats. That is why you may not get the side you asked for and why people are occasionally moved at the last minute. It is not arbitrary and it has nothing to do with anyone in particular.
The practical rule is simple: give the real number when you book. If somebody turns up heavier than stated, the aircraft may be over its limit, and the only remedies are leaving a person behind or buying another seat. Both are worse than an accurate figure weeks earlier.
Where an operator publishes a per-person limit it is on their listing. The figures vary between operators and aircraft types, which is why we do not print a number here — the one that matters is the one on the flight you are booking.
At the pad
Six things that happen, in order
The whole process takes about half an hour and most of it is arithmetic.
- Check in with ID and voucher
Photo identification and the booking on your phone. Straightforward, and it is where the weights are confirmed.
- Weights confirmed and seats assigned
Sometimes on a scale, sometimes verbally. The pilot works out the loading and tells you where to sit.
- The safety briefing
Short and specific rather than a legal recital: how to approach the aircraft, which direction never to walk in, how to get in and out, and what to do with loose items.
- Headsets on
Before you board. They cut the rotor noise almost completely and carry the pilot’s commentary for the whole flight, which is most of what makes it worth doing.
- Walk out in the order given
The pilot or a ground handler leads you. Do not wander, and do not go behind the aircraft.
- Belt in, and that is it
Doors close, the pitch of the rotor changes, and you are up. The whole ground process is the least interesting part of a genuinely remarkable twenty minutes.
