Why the Palm is different from every other landmark
Almost everything famous has a viewpoint. This does not.
No hill, no deck, no road that shows the shape. The plan was drawn from above and reads from above.
Think about how you see other famous places. The Eiffel Tower has the Trocadéro. Manhattan has Brooklyn Bridge and a dozen rooftops. The Grand Canyon has a rim you stand on. In every case the aerial view is a nicer version of something you can already see.
Palm Jumeirah has nothing like that. It is flat, it is at sea level, and the fronds are separated by water and villas. Drive the trunk road and you are on a six-lane road with apartment blocks either side. Walk a frond and you are on a residential street. Stand on the crescent at Atlantis and you can see the other end of the crescent, which is a line of buildings across water.
The palm tree exists only in the plan. It was drawn from above, built to be read from above, and photographed from above in every image that ever made you want to come. There is no ground-level equivalent because there cannot be one.

What you actually pick out from the air
Six things on the Palm
In roughly the order they appear once you lift off.
- The trunk and the fronds
Sixteen fronds off a central spine, each one a street of villas with water on both sides. From eight hundred feet the geometry is immediate and slightly absurd.
- The crescent
An eleven-kilometre breakwater wrapped around the outside, with hotels along it. It is what makes the Palm a lagoon rather than a set of exposed sandbars.
- Atlantis The Palm
The pink twin-towered resort at the top of the crescent, with the waterpark behind it. The single easiest landmark to identify from the air in all of Dubai.
- Atlantis The Royal
The newer, angular tower beside it, which looks from above like a stack of blocks that have been pushed slightly out of line on purpose.
- The colour of the water
The lagoon inside the crescent is a different colour from the open Gulf outside it, and the boundary is sharp. Nobody expects this and everybody photographs it.
- The scale of the reclamation
The thing photographs never convey. This is not a small structure with a clever shape. It is several square kilometres of land that did not exist thirty years ago.

Four rules, and the first one matters more than your camera
A dark shirt, no flash, a centimetre off the glass, and a wide frame.
Wear something dark. The single biggest cause of disappointing helicopter photographs is your own shirt reflected in the window. A dark top removes most of it before you have taken a frame.
Switch the flash off before you board. It fires into the glass and comes back as a white disc. This happens on every flight, to somebody.
Hold the lens a centimetre off the glass, not against it. Touching transmits vibration; too far away picks up reflection. A centimetre is the sweet spot.
Shoot the whole shape, not the detail. The Palm is the point and it needs a wide frame. A long lens on a frond gives you a street of villas, which you could have photographed from a taxi.
