Why Atlantis is the landmark that orients you
Everything else in Dubai looks like something else from the air. This does not.

From eight hundred feet a lot of Dubai resolves into towers that could be towers anywhere. The thing that immediately tells you where you are is Atlantis: a pink, symmetrical, twin-towered block with an arch through the middle, sitting alone at the top of a curved breakwater in the sea.
There is nothing else shaped like it and nothing else in that position. Passengers who have lost track of the geography find it instantly, and once you have Atlantis you have the whole Palm — because the crescent leads your eye back down to the fronds.
Atlantis The Royal beside it is the newer one, and from above it looks like a stack of rectangular blocks that somebody pushed slightly out of alignment on purpose. The contrast between the two — symmetrical pink and staggered white — is the clearest single illustration of how Dubai’s architecture changed in twenty years.
And behind them the Aquaventure waterpark, which from the ground is queues and palm trees and from the air is an extraordinary tangle of slides and rivers laid out like circuitry.

- The lagoon boundary
The water inside the crescent is a visibly different colour from the open Gulf outside it, and the line between them is sharp. Nobody expects this and everybody photographs it.
